AWESOME OR AWFUL HOSPITAL??

Hello, I am a long time resident of the SCV. I have enjoyed the new advertising campaign for Valencia….AWESOMETOWN. The advertisers are correct that the SCV is AWESOME. The sad thing is that the local Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital is the furthest possible from AWESOME. We need an awesome hospital not a hospital that patients are afraid to go to for care. As an example of how bad the care is, my daughter was born there last month and there was an emergency caused by the nurses that almost killed my daughter. The baby had to be transferred to another hospital. The therapist lost a tube in my daughter’s lung. The other hospital had to go in and remove the tube lost in my daughter’s lung. Henry Mayo is really an….AWFULHOSPITAL!!!! I am sure if you can go to another hospital you will be better treated. Why doesn’t the administrator respond to my daughter’s complication? No call has been made to me to ask how the baby is or even apologize!!!! I think I will in the future call the hospital “AWFULHOSPITAL” or Henry Hold the Mayo. I invite SCV citizens to click the link to a Rant and Rave about the local hospital. Maybe there are patients that are happy with the care and they should respond. The local newspaper has more letters to the editor that are highlighting the bad care than those highlighting good care. Please respond and let’s get this hospital’s problems aired out. I am hoping the hospital will respond to each and every one of the replies to this website. Let’s hope we can change the “AWFULHOSPITAL” to an “AWESOMEHOSPTAL.”

  1. I am sure this a typical foul-up of the local hospital. Seems like the hospital administrator, Roger Seaver, should go to school and learn how to run a quality hospital.

  3. My grandfather has the last name of LITTLETON...I was in his room at this hospital and the nurse came in to give him a transfusion. I said I don't think he is getting a transfusion as he is not anemic. The nurse said well the doctor ordered on for Mr. LITTLEFIELD and I must do what the doctor ordered. Well I stood up and said to the nurse that you have the wrong patient, she looked at the blood and said sorry, wrong patient. For the grace of GOD I was sitting in the room and if not my grandfather would have gotten someone else's blood. What is wrong with Mayo? When your the only game in town you can get by being terrible.!!!!!!!

  4. the place is a sham, and I am positive the shoddy care killed my mother. when she was in the ICU, the were loud and yelling right next to her room while she was trying to sleep, I left orders to be informed of any changes in her condition and i stressed any, less than 15 minutes after we left for the night, they put her on a breathing machine without even bothering to call, or ask us, saying she said it was ok, even tho my mother was barely conscious... I hate the place, and the list of things they do wrong is too long for me to type out.

  5. I don’t even know where to begin with my dissatisfaction with Henry Mayo…I was 32-years old and gave birth to my child via c-section, I was complaining of a massive headache within hours of delivery. The nurses said that is “normal” after a spinal. I also complained of discomfort at the incision site and requested ice for the pain. When I woke up the next morning, my bandages from my c-section had split while I was asleep. I then told the nurses that I was in severe pain, headache/incision and was extremely swollen and bloated…they laughed at me and said that is normal after having a baby, it doesn’t go away overnight. I tried to explain that I was not this big when I arrived (pregnant)! They did take my blood pressure on a regular basis which was slightly high for a “normal” person ranging around 145/90 and said that was probably due to the headache/pain. I told them I usually run low and was 117/75 even when I was in labor! As it turned out I left the hospital feeling horrible, sensitive to light, swollen with a severe pounding headache that I had since delivery (medication wasn’t helping). The next morning I woke up and asked my husband to go get formula for the baby…I wanted to take 4-painpills and go to sleep….he noticed I was somewhat delusional and called the doctor who advised him to take me to the emergency room….when we arrived my blood pressure was 213/110 and I weighted 17-pounds more than I did when I checked in to give birth. I was diagnosed with Post Partum Preeclampsia, Henry Mayo ER said that they had never seen a case of it there and had to contact another hospital for protocol. After they admitted me I was there a week…they were nice enough to place me back in the Woman’s Unit so I could have my baby stay with me. Unfortunately the nurse we had for 3 of the 7-days was sick and told me that they were short staffed and she had to work….my week old son ended up with a head/chest cold from hell!!! Watching your new baby cough and vomit from phlegm is a horrible feeling…fortunately he was my second child and I was calm considering the circumstances. I was still being affected by the Preeclampsia and was told that “it sometimes happens and will usually go away within a few weeks to months”….no other information was provided to me. I ended up catching the nurse’s cold from my son and while blowing my nose I suffered a Stroke. After returning to Henry May for the 3rd time in 3-weeks, I was told it was probably a TIA, I was admitted and placed in a room with an elderly lady who had fallen and hurt her knee. I was scheduled to have an MRI and had my Doctor come in and tell me that my MRI scan was “normal and showed no signs of stroke” which was strange since I didn’t recall having the scan done….after my husband and mother raised heck, they repeated the scan (or took me for the first one) and said that there was evidence of a Stroke after all! As it turns out they took my neighbor while I was in the restroom. She was hard of hearing and just went with the medical transporters. She was 76-years old….she looked good for her age but would have never passed for someone born in 1975! I would laugh every time I saw advertising stating that Henry May is a “Stroke Center”….sadly they are far from it. I have recently seen the advertisement for the Breast Imaging Center and only hope they are better with boobs than brains! They told me that sometimes people have Strokes after having a baby and sent me home. I ended up going to UCLA for a second opinion after conducting a few tests they discovered that I had a hole in my heart which wasn’t providing adequate blood supply to my kidneys which most likely caused the preeclampsia and made me a high risk for a Stroke. I have since had a patch (Helex) inserted in my heart to repair the hole.

  6. I have a lot of medical problems. This hospital saved my life...However I will never go back after today. I was in bad pain. Never once asked for narcotic pain medicine. Just something to numb the area like Novocain. The Dr. told me I had a drug problem.....after I told him I take several non-narcotic meds for several conditions I have (Heart problem, lung problem, bulged disc, blood condition) how does that make me a drug addict? he walked off. A nurse named Tom gives me my discharge paperwork. I said I wouldn't sign but wanted to talk to the supervisor about how the "Doctor" spoke to me he said and I quote "Get out or I'll call the cops!" I said What? Why are you treating me this way?" "Get out!" was his reply. I asked him his name. He said "Tom...and that's all you're getting! Get Out!" I walk with a cane. As I stood up I lifted my cane to use it to stand up he almost yells "Put that cane down!" like I was going to go nuts and swing it. like a weapon. I gave him a look of what are you smoking man and said "I use my cane to walk you ?#@!" Needless to say I was humiliated, angered and bewildered. Said a few choice words to 'Ol Tommie boy that I'm not proud I said but he deserved them. Oh yeah, I was still in horrible pain and felt worse when I left. All because I asked for Novocain. Wow....
